Tracy Moves Taxpayer Transparency Act

Nashville, Tenn.Senate Bill 1066, sponsored by Sen. Jim Tracy (R-Shelbyville)  won approval in the Senate State and Local Government Committee today.  The bill would enact the “Taxpayer Transparency Act of 2007”.

“The intent of this legislation is to bring openness to state government,” said Tracy.  “The taxpayers want to know how and where their money is being utilized.”

The bill would require the Department of Finance and Administration to develop a website that would post information regarding state spending.  The information would include the amount of the expenditure and the department or agency making the expenditure.

“The website will be a great tool for the people of Tennessee,” continued Tracy.  “Citizens would be able to easily search the database and quickly find information about where state funds are being spent.”

The bill will have to be heard in the Finance, Ways and Means Committee before being considered by the full Senate.
