Southerland Announces Sales Tax Holiday

Nashville, Tenn.Sen. Steve Southerland (R-Morristown) is proud to announce that Tennesseans will be allowed to retain more of their hard earned money during a "sales tax holiday," August 3-5, 2007. Consumers in Tennessee may make tax-free purchases during this special one-time period in August. The next sales tax holiday will occur March 21-23, 2008.

“This is an opportunity for the hardworking citizens of Tennessee to save on clothing, school supplies and computers for the upcoming school year,” said Southerland.

During the holiday, school supplies (including school art supplies) and clothing with a purchase price of $100 or less per item are exempt from sales tax.  Computers with a purchase price of $1,500 or less can also be purchased with out sales tax.

Retailers and consumers may find further information, including a retailer's guide, fact sheets on clothing, computers and school supplies, and answers to frequently asked questions on the Department of Revenue website at www.tntaxholiday.com

Questions can also be answered by calling (800) 342-1003 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EDT Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Southerland is currently serving his second term in the State Senate.  He is the Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Labor and Agriculture Committee. He also serves on the Senate Environment, Conservation and Tourism Committee, the Senate Transportation Committee and the Senate Ethics Committee.
