Burchett Bill to Get Tough with Sexual Predators Passes Senate Nashville, Tenn. – State Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) passed Senate Bill 295 last night on the floor of the Senate. The bill is the first of a number of proposals by Sen. Burchett to strengthen Tennessee’s laws dealing with convicted sexual predators. “This is a first step in what I hope will be a number of bills that we pass to get tough on sexual predators,” said Burchett. “Our ultimate goal is to keep our kids safe and make Tennessee less attractive to these sexual predators.” As amended, the bill would require a misdemeanor probation officer to determine if a new probationer is on the sexual offender registry. If the individual is on the registry and remains on probation, the officer would monitor the probationer's compliance with the residential and workplace location restrictions for sexual offenders. It unanimously passed the Senate on Monday night. The bill will now be sent to the House for action, before becoming law. ### |
