Burchett Bill to Prohibit Robo Calls Passes Senate Nashville, Tenn. – Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) announced today that Senate Bill 125 passed the Senate on Monday night by an overwhelming majority. The bill would remove a loophole from state law that allowed certain organizations and political candidates to make automated calls to households that are on the Do-Not-Call Register. “Tennesseans put their number on the Do Not Call Register for a reason,” said Burchett. “Everyone that has been annoyed with automated political calls will finally get some relief.” The bill, which will enact the “Tennesseans’ Right-To-Privacy Act of 2007”, did encounter opposition. Senators raised questions about the constitutionality of the legislation. Sen. Burchett pointed out that similar laws in other states have been challenged in court and ultimately upheld. The bill must now be passed in the House and signed by the Governor before becoming law. The companion House bill will be heard in a House subcommittee this coming week. ### |
