Matlock and Burchett Propose Drug Testing for Welfare Recipients Nashville, Tenn. – State Rep. Jimmy Matlock (R-Lenoir City) and State Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) have filed legislation that would require the Department of Human Services to implement a program of substance abuse testing as a condition for public assistance eligibility. “Common sense seems to imply that those who receive government assistance,” commented Matlock, “should be held to a certain standard of personal accountability.” SB 102/HB 588 would also require that the Department of Human Services report annually to the General Assembly on the program. “We shouldn’t have drug abusers supplementing their income with government funds,” said Burchett. “I look forward to working with Representative Matlock on passing this legislation.” The bill is scheduled to be heard in the Senate General Welfare, Health and Human Resources Committee next week. ### |
