Beavers Advances Bill to Get Tough on Sexual Predators

Nashville, Tenn.Sen. Mae Beavers (R-Mt. Juliet) is sponsoring legislation to get tough on convicted sexual predators.  Senate Bill 326 is moving through the Senate and proposes to increase the sentence for a person convicted of child rape.

“We want to send the message that Tennessee is a safe haven for children, not a welcome place for sexual predators,” said Beavers.

As amended, Senate Bill 326 proposes to set the minimum penalty for rape of a child at 25 years in prison, with the maximum being life in prison.  Currently the penalties are 15 to 60 years in prison.

The bill unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on March 20th and is awaiting action by the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee.

Beavers serves as the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.  Beavers also serves on the Senate Commerce, Labor and Agriculture Committee. She represents Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Macon, Smith, Sumner, Trousdale, and Wilson Counties.
